Even today, after almost 21 years, there is a deadly fire smoldering in the burnt-out reactor that can only be kept under control with a huge concrete sarcophagus. Hailed as the savior of energy policy in the 50s and 60s, this idea disappeared with the super-disaster of Chernobyl in a huge radioactive cloud that terrified the whole of Northern Europe.
